When it comes to writing for nonprofit websites, we expect our content to do a great deal of heavy lifting: capture the attention of those interested in our cause, build belief in our organizations, position our nonprofits as thought leaders or experts, achieve high-ranking search engine results, and motivate donations and volunteerism, to name just a few examples.

But writing for nonprofits is not easy for many reasons:

  • We are constantly writing for multiple audiences.
  • As content creators, we’re often faced with competing internal priorities and competing requests for our copywriting skills and time.
  • We’re often working with extremely limited time and resources.

And with content marketing rising in popularity and a general shift to a greater investment in online channels, your organization likely needs to generate increasing volumes of web content. How are you handling this increasing demand?

In the last two months, the two most viewed articles at the Nonprofit MarCommunity were posts on writing better ‘donate’ and ‘volunteer’ pages and ideas for nonprofit blog posts. The appetite for help with writing web copy for nonprofits is certainly there, so let’s use our next #NPMC Chat to share challenges and help each other!

How do you handle copywriting for online channels?

How do you generate content for your nonprofit organization’s website and other online properties? How do you keep up? Who writes the copy? Do you have someone dedicated to keeping your web content fresh, relevant and updated? An employee, volunteer or intern? Or is writing just part of your role?

What tips, tricks, strategies and processes do you have in place to address your need for content and to foster productivity and creativity? How do you keep your copywriting skills sharp: what books, courses, webinars or other sources do you turn to? What web writing stumbling blocks do you need help overcoming?
